On the Boards

Here is what we have got on our plate for this upcoming season.

Construction & Completion of the O'Rileys Trail

This new trail follows an old mining trail that traverses the north side of Coonskin Mountain from the top of Boomerang road to the Bear Creek trail head. When completed this trail will be a scenic adventure allowing foot and bicycle traffic a multi directional route from the Town of Telluride to Mountain Village.

Connecting the Prospect and Village Trails with the Village Core

This new section of trail will be about .75 miles in length. It will have a short leg that connects the Prospect trail to the Village trail, and will then continue to snake through some trees to finish closer to the village core.

Mapping and signage in the Alta Lakes Basin

Most everyone's favorite ride includes climbing the Prospect trail and descending into the Alta Lakes basin. However, after decades of this area being used for guided horseback tours, an un-organized spider web of trails were left behind. For anyone but the most keen locals, it is easy to get yourself lost or wind up on a dead end trail that leads to private property. Our goal is to work with the US Forest service in first mapping all existing trails in the area and second, determining what trails are appropriate to be left open and which are dead ends or redundant and will be closed. Some new trail construction may take place depending on what we determine.

Construction of Phase II of the Mountain Village Bike Park

3 miles of trail already completed, another couple have already been mapped out. We intend to move forward with phase II once it gets all approvals necessary. Phase II currently has planned for opening up a second pod of downhill trails, this area is a tight grouping of trees just south of lift 2 and the Nastar race arena. It has great potential for technical downhill features to challenge the expert riders. These trails will be designed for slower speeds and technical features like rocky decent's, drops, tight turns, and built features. Also included in phase II will be a slalom or Mountain cross track, a short cross country loop and skill building area on the Double Cabin ski run. This area will be aimed at helping all abilities improve their bike handling skills in a safe environment. Allowing riders to hone their skills before they get over their head on one of our more challenging expert trails.

Mill Creek Bridge - Re-visit/Re-design

This one is self explanatory... Nature brought a bigger hand to the table when it came to spanning this creek. We'll be working with the Forest Service and probably an engineer to develop a bomb proof span over Butcher Creek.

Assisting the US Forest Service in local trail maintenance.

Every spring our trails are littered with debris left from months of snow and winter storms. We'll be putting fourth the effort to assist the Forest Service to get these trails cleared sooner so that when we are all sitting around in the off season we won't have to wait till June to get our bikes on the trails.

Additional: Email us if there are any other projects you would like to see come to fruition.

We can't make any promises up front but SMBA was formed for this reason exactly. We want to provide an empowered voice for the mountain bike community as well as other trail users.

Send your letters to info@telluridesmba.org and be heard!
